Where Is UK Located? What are UK Countries? UK Map
The United Kingdom (UK) is an island nation in northwestern Europe, made up of Great Britain (made up of England, Scotland and Wales) and Northern Ireland. In English the country is called United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom (UK) is bordered on the south by the Channel, on the east by the North Sea and on the west by the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Its territory also includes, belonging to Great Britain, the Isle of Wight, Anglesey, the archipelagoes of Scilly, Orkney and Hebrides. Northern Ireland (Ulster) occupies the north-east of the island of Ireland.
The United Kingdom (UK) had 63 181 775 habitants in 2007. With an average density of about 260 inhabitants per km2, the island has one of the highest densities in Europe. England, with 83% of the total population, is the most populous. Scotland, home to just under 9% of the population, is the least populated. Wales and Northern Ireland host 5% and 3% respectively of the British population.
The capital, seat of the government and largest city of the United Kingdom (UK), is London with more than 7 million inhabitants. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, that of Wales is Cardiff and that of Northern Ireland is Belfast.
The official language of the United Kingdom (UK) is English, which belongs to the group of Germanic languages and has incorporated many contributions of Latin languages, including French, during the Norman conquest. The Celtic languages, Welsh and Gaelic, are still spoken in Wales: Welsh is the official language, equal with English in administration and legal affairs.
In Scotland it is mostly spoken in the islands; in Northern Ireland, it remains, but weakened. Brythonic, a dialect very close to Breton spoken on the continent, is only used by a few hundred speakers. In the Channel Islands, Franco-Norman dialects are still in use.
