Where Is South Sudan Located In Africa?

South Sudan, in the long form Republic of South Sudan, is a country in East Africa whose capital is Juba.

Located west of the Horn of East Africa, South Sudan has the twentieth largest area of Africa with an area of 619,745 km2. South Sudan is bordered on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Central African Republic, on the east by Ethiopia, and on the south by Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The South Sudanese government has issued a draft provisional constitution, in which the name of the state is Republic of South Sudan. This name was chosen for ease of use among several other proposals, such as “Azania”, “New Sudan”, “Republic of the Nile”, “Equatoria” (referring to ancient Equatoria), “Kush” (referring to the ancient kingdom of Kush) or “Djouwama” (Juwama), the latter name being constructed from the first syllables of the three regional capitals, Juba, Wau and Malakal.

The presence of the White Nile and its many tributaries, as well as the tropical climate, allow abundant agriculture producing cotton, peanuts, sorghum, millet, wheat, maize, gum arabic, sugar cane , cassava (tapioca), mangos, papayas, bananas, sweet potatoes and sesame.

The White Nile and its tributaries also allow the production of hydroelectricity.

The subsoil of South Sudan is also very rich: it contains oil, iron ore, copper, chromium, zinc, tungsten, mica, silver and gold.

Prior to independence, South Sudan accounted for about 85 percent of the 470,000 barrels of oil produced per day for Sudan as a whole. However, the equipment and the oil industry are essentially in the North. Oil pipelines from the south lead north to Port Sudan on the shores of the Red Sea. The main refinery is 70 kilometers north of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum.

In order to strengthen its independence from Sudan, South Sudan is considering a pipeline project linking it to Kenya, including the Lamu refinery 240 kilometers north of the port of Mombassa.
