Nigeria is a state in western Africa, bordering the Gulf of Guinea and bordering Benin, Niger, Chad and Cameroon. Its area is 923,768 km² and its population of 149 million inhabitants (2009). It is a federal republic, independent of the United Kingdom since 1960, and administratively divided into 36 states and one territory, vcelui of the federal capital, Abuja. Other major cities are: Lagos (the most populous), Port Harcourt, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Oshogbo, Ogbomosho, Kano and Sokoto.

Located on the shores of the Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria has 4,047 km of land borders and 853 km of coastline. It is bordered on the west by Benin (773 km), on the east by Cameroon (1 690 km), on the north by Niger (1 497 km), and by Chad on the northeast (84 km ).
The center of Nigeria is formed by the Baoutchi massif, around which plateaus extend. To the east, the Adamaoua massif marks the border with Cameroon and has the highest point of the country, Chappal Waddi, 2419 m high. In the vicinity of the sea; is a wide plain, partly formed by the alluvium of Niger.
The country is the leading economic power of the African continent in 2016, and the 27th in the world (GDP) according to the World Bank. Nigeria’s economic and demographic weight has earned it the nickname “Giant of Africa”. However, despite significant oil production and a diversified economy, the country remains relatively poor, particularly because of high levels of corruption.
Since 1991, the capital of Nigeria is the new city of Abuja. The country is part of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Its inhabitants are Nigerians.
