Where Is Nicaragua Located On The World Map?
Nicaragua, in long form the Republic of Nicaragua, is a country of Central America. It borders Costa Rica in the south and Honduras in the north. It is also surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Its capital and largest city is Managua.
Nicaragua has been a member of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (Alba) since 2007.
Nicaragua is a relatively mountainous country. The coastal plains (Caribbean and Pacific) rise progressively towards the central (sedimentary) chain, where culminates the Mogoton (2,438 m). The highest peaks are in the north, near the Honduras border. The south of the country, on the border of Costa Rica, is marshy.
The plains along the Pacific are punctuated by many volcanoes, including those of the Cordillera Maribios, and host the two great lakes of the country, Lake Nicaragua (or Cocibolba) and Lake Managua. Lake Nicaragua has several islands, including the volcanic island of Ometepe and the Solentiname Islands archipelago. Lakes represent about 7% of the country’s area.
Around these lakes, the rivers that feed them and the rivers that flow through them and along the Pacific coast live the majority of the population, in humid valleys, on the mountainsides and on the dry plains of bush. The eastern part of the country, exposed to heavy rainfall, hurricanes and cyclones that regularly cross the Caribbean Sea, is very sparsely populated, except on a few ports on the Atlantic coast and on the islands of the Caribbean Sea.
The country is located on an active tectonic zone, and is often shaken by earthquakes and eruptions of its many volcanoes.
The climate is tropical in the lowlands, cooler on the plateaus. The Caribbean coast receives much more rainfall than the Pacific coast.
Administratively, the country is divided into 15 departments (Boaco, Carazo, Chinandega, Chontales, Esteli, Granada, Jinotega, Leon, Madriz, Managua, Masaya, Matagalpa, Nueva Segovia, Rio San Juan, Rivas) and 2 autonomous regions (Atlantico Norte , Atlantico Sur).
