Lithuania is a country in northeastern Europe, belonging to the group of Baltic countries, member of the European Union. Its name is Lietuva in Lithuanian.
Lithuania is bordered on the north by Latvia, on the east and south by Belarus, on the south-east by Poland and by the Kaliningrad enclave of Russia, and on the west by the Baltic Sea.
The regions of the country are called apskritis and are 10 in number: Alytus County, Kaunas County, Klaipėda County, Marijampolė County, Panevėžys County, Šiauliai County, Tauragė County, Telšiai County, Utena County, Vilnius County
Vilnius, the capital, is the largest city in the country, the other two main urban centers are Kaunas and the port of Klaipėa.
Lithuania covers an area of 65,300 km². It is a low plain, slightly undulating to the west and south. Most of the territory, located in the Niemen basin, does not exceed 250 m altitude. The country has nearly 3,000 lakes covering 20% of 100 of the territory. The main river, the Niemen, has been developed for hydroelectric power generation. The country also has extensive swamps, particularly to the north and east, many of which have been drained.
Lithuania has a climate dominated by Baltic Sea influences, especially in the west of the country, where summers are cooler and winters are milder. The climatic conditions become more continental in the eastern part. Average annual rainfall varies from less than 600 mm in the center of the country to more than 850 mm in the west.
Lithuania attracts many tourists from neighboring countries and all over the world. In 2013, 2.2 million tourists, of whom 1.2 million were from other countries, stayed at various accommodations in Lithuania.
