The Dead Sea lies to the northwest and the Red Sea to the southwest. A high plateau stretches 324 km from Syria to Ra’s an Naqb in the south. The capital, Amman, is 800 m above sea level. To the north-west of the capital, the region offers a landscape of wooded or cultivated hills. To the west, the Dead Sea, 400 m below sea level, is the lowest point on earth. The Jordan is a river that connects the Dead Sea to the Sea of Galilee (Israel). West of the Jordan extends the area controlled by the Palestinian National Authority. The desert occupies the majority of the east of the country. Jordan has a small coastline on the Red Sea, whose main city is Aqaba.

The main cities are Amman, Irbid and Zarqa, all located in the north-west of the country.

Jordan is mainly composed of an arid desert plateau in the East, and a mountainous region in the West. The Great Rift Valley and the Jordan separate Jordan from Israel. The highest point of the country is Jabal Ramm at 1,754 m, while the Dead Sea is the lowest point.

The climate is dry and hot, especially on most of the territory occupied by the Arabian desert. However, the country has a rainy season, in the west, from November to April.
