The Republic of Haiti is located in the Caribbean Basin (part of North America’s geographic area). It occupies the western third of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean.

The island of Hispaniola is the second largest island of the Greater Antilles (one of the three archipelagos of the Caribbean, consisting of Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico). It is located in the west of the Dominican Republic.

Haiti has an area of 27,750 square kilometers (10,714 square miles) and its capital is Port-au-Prince. French and Haitian Creole are the official languages.

Located 87 km east-south-east of Cuba and bordering the Dominican Republic, the territory of Haiti is mainly constituted by the western part of the island of Haiti which is also called “Terre haute or mountainous “, to which is added a number of other islands and archipelagos such as:

  • Gonave
  • Turtle Island
  • Cayemites
  • Ile-a-Vache.

Navasse Island is considered to be one of the minor islands distant from the United States, but is nevertheless claimed by Haiti.

The relief of the “mountainous land” is usually made up of steep mountains with small coastal plains and valleys. As for the entire island, that of the Republic of Haiti consists of two main mountainous strips separated by the Plain Cul-de-Sac: one to the north, where rise the chain of Haut-Piton, the massif of the Montagnes Noires and the chain of Matheux; the other in the South, made up of the massif of La Selle peak and the massif de la Hotte.

Despite large-scale deforestation throughout the country, Haiti still has forested areas that extend to the neighboring country of the Dominican Republic. Thus these two states share the pine forest of the island of Hispaniola which still covers a part of the massif of Pic la Selle and the Massif de la Hotte.

The central part and the east form a large plateau of altitude. The main Haitian river is Artibonite.

Haiti (like the rest of the island of Hispaniola) is in a seismically active zone, between two tectonic plates: the North American plate to the north and the Caribbean plate to the south, making the country particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. That of January 12, 2010, proved to be the largest earthquake ever recorded in this country, devastating especially the region of the capital Port-au-Prince, making more than 300 000 dead, and millions of homeless.

Nicknamed “the pearl of the Antilles”, Haiti has a tropical climate with an average temperature of 30 degrees Celsius and 364 sunny days a year. Tourism in Haiti is both cultural, with forts, including the citadel La Ferrière and the palace of Sans-Souçi and towns like Labadie as well as natural, with the turquoise water beaches of Jacmel.

After the embargo against Cuba decided by US President John Kennedy in 1962 (and partially lifted in 2000 only), Haiti becomes a resort for rich American tourists.
