Burundi was a former German colony from 1890 to 1919. After the German defeat of 1918, it is placed under Belgian mandate (which then has close to the Belgian Congo, now Democratic Republic of Congo). Burundi becomes an independent kingdom in 1962 and a republic since 1966.
